Motorcycle Repair: cold natured electaglide, drag pipes, straight pipes

Question
Hi Mike.  I just bought a 1991 FLHS with 26,000 miles on it.  It seems very cold natured. After it gets warmed up, it runs fine, but it takes what seems like ten minutes to warm up.  This is on a 40 degree day.  I don't know what all's been upgraded on the engine.  It's got S&S heads and a S&S carb.  I think the cam has probably been upgraded also.  It's got straight pipes with no baffles.  My question is, would the baffleless pipes contribute to the cold nature?  I'm planning on installing some big city thunder baffles.  I've got a Sportster with these baffles in drag pipes and the performance and sound seems to be very good.  Will incorrect jetting of the carb cause it to be cold natured?  thanks..........Bill

Answer
Its just the nature of the beast. The more the motor is upgraded the more cold natured it is. On a 40 degree day, it takes a motor about 15 minutes to really warm up at an idle. The pipes really dont have anything to do with being cold natured. Changing the jetting will not help either.
Happy new year
Mike
