Nissan Repair: Heating my vehicle, nissian altima, answer mark

Question

Von,

Thank you very much for your answer. I was wondering if you could tell me where on the car this water neck is located? My wife ask the service manager and he says it is not under warranty, because we do not take the care there for services. I will do it myself, but just want to know for sure where this valve is located on the engine compartment? Again, thank you very much for your response.

Von,

My wife has a 2005 nissian altima with 26,000 miles on it. The problem is she says the car will not heat the inside up until she goes over 40 mph. Once she goes over 40 mph it is fine, but under she will get nothing but cool air. I am overseas right now serving in the army. I would really appreciate it if you could give us some advice. Her dad would look at the problem if you could help. Thanks very much..

Mark,

I would think there is an air bubble in the heater hose that is causing the water not to flow until she gets going faster.  I would have her take it to the dealer since you have another 10K miles of warranty and they should correct the problem.  I think it only needs to be burped.  There is a vent on the water neck that you unscrew and that lets the air out.  With the engine running loosen the screw and then let that air out.  When antifreeze starts coming out tighten the screw.  But, remember the screw is brass and you don't take it all the way out.  just a turn to let the air out and then tighten once you have the air out.

Answer
Mark,

The thermostat housing is located where the top hose connects to the engine.  There is a big black rubber hose that comes from the upper part of the radiator and goes to the engine.  If you have a 3.5 it is on the passenger side on the timing cover.  If it is a 4 cylinder it is close to the same location.  But, it should be covered under warranty.
