Steering Column Repair: 1989 firebird steering column, pontiac fire bird, gm vehicles

Question
I have a 1989 Pontiac Fire bird and had to replace the steering column.  I can not get it to turn over once I replaced it.  I turned the ignition on for 10 minutes and that did not work, nor did disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes.  It has a security chip in the key.

Answer
Hi Kevin:
The antitheft system you have is called a VATS system.  You need to take the original key to a lock smith and have them read that chip (eg. VATS #8).  Then purchase a new blank with that reading (#8 VATS key) and have them cut it to the key cuts on the replacement key.  Then you will have the correct VATS key chip being read in the column when the newly created replacement key is attempting to start the engine.  Then it will start.

We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to bypass the VATS system on GM vehicles that have the chip on the key.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions.

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply email us on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally

Good luck
