Steering Column Repair: 78 Corvette steering column, jeep cherokees, 78 corvette

Question
I have a 78 Corvette and the steering column is a bit of a mess.  It is a regular column w/o any apparent special features, in fact it reminds me the steering columns out of the Jeep Cherokees from 84 to 94, just a regular Chevy column.  In stead of repairing this one can I just replace it and what would be a compatable donor?

Answer
Hi Cliff:
Typically, the 78 Corvette had a tilt / telescopic column.  Is this the case with yours?  What's wrong with the one you have?  Are you interested in rebuilding it?
To answer your question directly, the column you have is only replaceable with a corvette column.  The mounting to the dash and floor are unique.  Even though the upper end looks like every other GM car, the Vette is different.
Let me know how I can help you with the one you have.
