Steering Column Repair: 1999 Voyager wont Start consistantly, jeep cherokee, tamperproof

Question
My 1999 Voyager will start fine....then all of the sudden, nothing. The key turns, everything lights up, then if a start to mess around with the wheel, all of the sudden it will fire right up. The steering wheel does NOT LOCK, Is this related?

Answer
Hi John:

It sounds like a bad ignition switch.  This is not a hard switch to replace, but it does require a special #10- tamperproof torx socket to remove it and you need to be very careful pulling it straight off the shaft, otherwise you will break the rod inside and cost yourself $300 more.

We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the lower portion of a Jeep (or Dodge) steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example is for a 1998 Jeep Cherokee but the column is similar to yours.  You don't need to do all the steps, but take a look at steps 6,7 & 8.  That's the process I am talking about on your vehicle.
