Steering Column Repair: STEERING COLUMN, ford steering column, f150 4x4

Question
My truck steering column in the F150 4x4 1997 model just decided to not come out of park yesterday. The ignition also locked but this has been fixed this problem but the column will not come out of park. I can shift this in the transmission. How can I fix this?

Answer
Hi Mike:
Sometimes its a brake switch release problem and sometimes it's a shift tube on the column problem.
Working with someone, step on the brake pedal and see if you have brake lights.  If you do, then the problem is in the shift interlock on the top of the column.  If you don't, then the problem is a bad brake lights switch (and connector-Ford makes a repair kit).

We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to repair and/or rebuild the shift tube of a Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example may be a different vehicle than yours, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply follow the links to order on line or email us on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally

Good luck
