Towing Issues: towing from private driveway, home owner associations, tow truck company

Question
Yesterday a neighbor authorized us to park three cars in their driveway.  The neighbor was out of town and had previously given us permission to leave our cars there while they were out. We also left on a trip and returned today to find out that the cars had been towed.  According to the tow truck company, the cars were impounded to a lot that only cars that are involved in accidents and cars that are ordered to be towed by the police department are taken there.  My question is, if we had permission from the owner of the house were the cars were located, was the police or the tow truck company in authority to remove them from that private property?  If not, who should we seek to recover tow fees from?

Answer
Again, another question without the City or State given so I can look at the laws and point you in the right direction...

There are about a million different reasons vehicles can be towed from private property and while I really do not know all of them it can be various reasons including abandoned vehicle laws, HOA (home owner associations), crimes committed against the property or vehicles on the property.

Basically someone had to call and complain about the vehicles and as such the police took action...

As to if it was legal well it would depend on what the reasons were given for the tows... If the vehicles were broke into, then it might of been for processing of a crime scene. They might of been stolen from the driveway and used in a crime...
Or they might of been involved in an accident while parked in the driveway..

But in a nut shell they were "not registered to that address" so that might of been a reason also.

My crystal ball is a bit fuzzy lately..

As to who to "SUE" to recover the fees from, well that all depends on the reasons given for towing...

I would need more information to help try to answer this question...

Sorry for the lack of answers to the question.
