Towing Issues: excessive towing charge, police tows, insurance billings

Question
My daughter had her car tow after one wheel (rear wheel) left the road and over a stone wall.
The other three wheels are still on the road.
The towing company charge $526 to tow to their yard about 5 miles away.

Their charge $150 come out call, $100 use winch, $100 labor, $100 clear up site (no damage or liquid spill), they say they had to move some stone to get under the car to put on winch. Plus mileage and tax.

I think this is too much.
The car is not damaged at all.

It all happened on a small road had an accident, police block off the road and told everyone to backup, my daughter backup on to a stone wall the top is flat with the road and one wheel fell off the road. So police called the tow company. Now the police say the do not get involve on the tow charge.

Answer
It sounds a bit much to me also... I always wonder why there is a winch, labor and clean up fee on bills, (and yes I drive tow truck)...

But a lot of tow companies when they are responding to police calls have rates higher than regular retail rates, due to contracts or just the "cost shifting of expenses" to police tows and insurance billings.

The police are correct in the fact that they do not really regulate or get involved in tow bills in most cases... Tow companies are private businesses and as such set rates which they feel are profitable and fair...

Check with your insurance company as to the bill and they might pay some, all or none of it depending on your coverage levels and limits....
Also is there a motor club you belong to ? They might refund some, all or none of the bill also.

But I am not able to really say if it was fair or not as I was not here and do not know what the tow company actually had to do to recover the vehicle...
