Answer
Hi Vicky;
Your mate is correct.  The clutch is completely burned up.  Try not to experiment any further with the car to try to make it move though, because if you continue to make that smell come out of the car, you run the risk of destroying the flywheel on the back of the engine, and that will increase the cost of the repair by a substantial amount.  If you are lucky(just a little bit) the flywheel can be resurfaced, and then a new clutch kit can be installed.  The new clutch kit on Volkswagens does not normally come with the "throwout bearing" included, but do yourself a big favor, and have a new one installed when the new clutch is installed.  Please take the car to a professional who will stand behind the job with some kind of warranty.  Don't just have a friend of a friend do the work, unless they work for Volkswagen as a technician, or they work for a company that specializes in German cars, like Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes Benz, and BMW.  Very similar tools are necessary to remove the axle bolts from all of these German makes, and not just any technician has them readily available.  I would recommend calling some local repair shops, and even the local Volkswagen dealer for comparison.  I hope this helps a little, Vicky, and I wish you great success, and good luck with your repair.
