QUESTION: I need help figuering out a p1740 code on my 2000 dodge 2500 4x4 with a 360 magnum.I've cleared it twice but it keeps popping up.Also when it's cold the idle jumps up and down about 500rpm.Don't know if that is part of the same problem or not?

ANSWER: HEY PAUL.1740 SETS WHEN RPM DROP IN TCC LOCK UP OR OVERDRIVE ARE OUT OF TARGET RANGE.THIS COULD BE CAUSED BY ENGINE PERFORMANCE SO DEAL WITH THAT FIRST. IF THE ENGINE CANT MAKE UP ITS MIND THEN THE TRANS HAS NO CLUE WHAT TO DO. THIS COULD BE AN INTERNAL TRANS PROBLEM BUT WE NEED TO RULE OUT THE ENGINE PERFORMANCE FIRST. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE BEFORE IT COMES BACK ON AFTER ITS CLEARED? WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE FLUID AND HOW MANY MILES DOES IT HAVE? LET ME KNOW,THANKS,TIM.

QUESTION: It takes about 25 miles for the code to pop back up. the truck has 110,000 on it. the fluid is a little brownish colored but doesn't smell burnt.The motor surges when it is cold for about 1 to 2 min then is fine.Don't know if that is part of the problem or not?What do I look at for the engine performance part?Should I have a trany flush or just change the filter and the oil with that?Thanks I'll look for your answers!

HEY PAUL,SORRY I AM GETTING BACK TO YOU SO LATE,I HAD A FAMILY EMERGENCY TO TEND TO. WHEN YOU DRIVE YOU NEED TO FEEL THE 2ND SHIFT THEN THIRD,THEN THE CONVERTER LOCKS UP AND YOU SHOULD SEE THAT ON YOUR TACH,THEN IT SHIFTS TO OVERDRIVE. ONE OF THOSE SHIFTS WHEN ITS GETS WARM (LOCK UP,OVERDRIVE)IS NOT HAPPENING. VERIFY THAT WHEN IT GETS WARM. IT PROBABLY NEEDS SHIFT SOLENOIDS REPLACED FOR THE OD AND THE TCC.IF YOU REPLACE ONE YOU REPLACE THEM BOTH AS THEY ARE SOLD AS A PAIR ONLY. LOOK FOR ONE OF THOSE SHIFTS TO NOT OCCUR WHEN ITS GETS WARM. LET ME KNOW,TIM
