The ignition switch on a Pontiac Trans Am is responsible for signaling the starter to turn over, which in turn starts the engine. If your Trans Am's ignition switch goes out, the starter doesn't know when to engage and the Trans Am will not start. To fix the problem, you'll have to replace the ignition switch with a new one. First though, the old switch has to come out. We're taking this one out of a 2002 Pontiac Trans Am, but the process is similar for Trans Ams built in other years as well.
Pop the hood. Remove the negative and then the positive terminal connections with an open-end wrench. Allow the Trans Am to sit for 30 minutes. Lock the steering wheel by pushing it from side to side, then make sure the ignition switch is locked in place as well.
Remove the panel below the steering column using the 1/4-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the steering column cover using the 1/4-inch ratchet and socket as well. Unbolt the steering column from the dashboard framework with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket, then lower the column down slightly to gain access to the top of the column.
Unplug the yellow wiring harness on the steering column with your hands, then unplug the remaining wiring on the column. Remove the ignition switch actuator rod from the ignition switch using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the ignition switch from the car.
