How to Change the Oil in a 2005 Scion TC

Performing the scheduled maintenance of your 2005 Scion touring coupe prolongs the life of your engine. The manufacturer recommends that you complete an oil change at every 5,000 mile interval or every six months. The use of quality parts and oil grade is paramount. There are many benefits to performing your vehicle's scheduled oil changes. A regular oil change maximizes engine performance, releases less harmful emissions, maintains better gas mileage and creates a smoother drive.

Things You'll Need

  • Oil pan
  • 14mm wrench
  • Filter wrench
  • Funnel
  • 4 quarts of API SL, SAE 5W-30 motor oil
  • Scion OEM filter
  • Jack
  • 2 jack stands
  • Lift the front end of the car with the jack using the jacking markers located on either side of the vehicle.

  • Secure each side with a jack stand. Make sure that your 2005 Scion floor break is activated.

  • Slide under the vehicle and locate the oil pan which is toward the front bumper. The oil filter is right next to the oil pan.

  • Loosen the oil drain bolt using the 14mm wrench slowly.

  • Properly position the oil pan to receive the draining oil and to avoid spills.

  • Use a filter wrench to remove the used filter. Insert the new filter making sure to moisten the ring for a better seal.

  • Plug the oil drain once all the oil has leaked into pan.

  • Remove the oil filler cap on the top of your 2005 Scion Tc's motor. Insert the funnel and pour the oil in. Pay attention to the dipstick so you don't overfill. Your engine's maximum oil capacity is 3.8 liters. Lubricate the engine by starting the vehicle. Let the motor run for at least 15 seconds. Quiet the engine and check for any leaks.
