Auto Parts: 2001 Volvo V70 Turbo, air fuel mixture, pep boys

Question
My mechanic says that my 2001volvo v70 needs a turbo. Can somebody explain to me what a turbo is? how much a used one can cost? where will be the cheapest place to buy it? Your help is very welcome. Thanks

Answer
Hi Raphael,

In short, a turbo uses exhaust pressure to spin a turbine attached to the intake manifold that pressurizes the air/fuel mixture going to the cylinder. The theory behind it is that under pressure, you can fit MORE air and fuel into the cylinder. More air and fuel means a bigger explosion which in turn means the engine will produce more power. Turbos typically increase regular engine power by 50% so if you have an engine making 200 horsepower, when you add a turbo, it should make close to 300.

I can probably help you find a good replacement at a decent price but I need to know if you have a 2.3L engine or a 2.4L. Your least expensive avenue for replacement is used (Knucklebusters).

Your mechanic should be able to answer all of the questions better than I could having never seen your vehicle. Besides, if he knows it's bad, he should be able to know how to explain it to you. Maybe it is time you started hunting for a new person to work on your vehicle(s). My advice on finding a new technician is: Steer clear of 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
