Audi Repair: Multitronic gear sensor Audi 2002 1.8T, componant, gear lever

Question
QUESTION: Hi Greg,The PNRD light is currently flushing on my dush board. After taking it to the Audi dealer there found that a switch/sensor in side the Multitronic gear lever needs replacing and that it would cost me alot of money. However my car is out of waranty and i need to replace this myself. Surely this switch/sensor can be replaced or does the replacing have to be in such a way that the cars computer needs to be ajusted? Can you maybe please give instructions on how to open the gear lever to replace the faulty componant?
Best Regards

ANSWER: HELLO
This is very easy , the wore thing is to get the shifter handle off.
So, to take the shifter handle off, -- if you look on your shifter you can see the knob and chrome round slave under, that slave has to go down so it's not stuck/connect to the knob(it will go down maybe 1/8 inch)pull out the chrome shifter's knob button and pull the knob up (it will not be easy -watch your face, I hit myself many times) You have to hold that button out or it will go inside and stay there. Onece the knob is off , slave come out, plastic around shifter comes out(just pull it up) and you will see that plate is hold on each side by 4 plastic (white) pieces.
pry them with a pick or anything you can use and the whole shifter indicator with shade will come out (up)
Shifter shade has to magnets inside make sure they inside , sometimes they getting loose and this also cause shifter lights to flush or stay ON. '
Trans module will reset it self once you move shifter and every thing is OK. Before buying any parts , take it a part and see if the shade and magnets are OK.
good luck          Greg

QUESTION: Hi,From what i've observed in selecting the different gears, the problem is occuring when selecting the "R" on the shifter selector. I'm not sure which trans module i have ("TCM ???"). Is there any way i can find this out?

Answer
hello
TCM- or transmission control module will have faults . To find out what is it , you will need to plug in Scanner or Audi VAG  into OBD connector. The fault will help us a lot.
Did you replace anything?, Most of the time - shade brakes or magnet gets loose, but I also have seen  bad electronic plates where magnets are making contacts, but without the fault - I'm not sure
