Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Buick dies while driving, crankshaft sensor, buick regal

Question
Hi, My 94 buick regal (v.8 130,000, loaded, been reg maintained) dies while driving off and on. It has done this intermittently for 3-4 years. My daughters drives it now while away at college. She is an Ag major & attends labs at the school farm way out on a remote No. Calif. hwy. Problem is this: it has started dying again on her. Suddenly Out of knowhere, without warning, it will just turn off. It can happen anywhere, going 80 mph or standing still. She just had a local mechanic do repairs he reccommend replacing the ignition sensor for a total of $500.00~ $400-(parts) $100- in labor. His diagnostic test showed codes that said it was either the main computer or the igntion sensor.
She replaced the sensor & it did the same thing the next day. This time with less warnging than before. 1st time check eng soon lite went on, started to run rough, then serv eng lite came on again, it dies. 2nd time no warning lights, She was driving down this rural highway at night, alone, and it dies. She managed to push it to the farm where it still sits. I have had numerous mechinical people look at it and no one seems to know for sure what the heck the problem is. Is this what Buicks do on their the way out, is this common, can it be fixed, how can i drive it home (4 hrs away) without stalling it? Is it safe to drive?

Answer
hi cindy, well not realy sure what cars are thinking on there way out, prob same things as us lol.i think cindy if you are right about the year, then we will have to call this car a v-6 instead of a v-8.2 cyls but the diff is immense.if it is a v-6 then it needs a cranksensor ignition module or possibly a fuel pump.you said they put a ignition sensor could this have been a ignition or a crankshaft sensor.both parts can cause this.??a  fuel pump will cause a engine to stall when it get,s hot and generally will not restart for several hours.a cranksensor will cause it to shut off like you turned key off and then restart and be fine for awhile.cranksensor will do the same.so if your repair bill say,s they replaced the crank sensor then you need to have the ignition module changed.the price is confuseing to me as the cranksensor is about 60.00 and that is high.and the ignition module is 100.00 max.and we know he supposedly replaced one of them.but with one hundred labor.and a 500 bill it just don,t add up.to drive home as long as someone is following and you are prepared for it to quit on you, there is no reason you can,t drive it home maybe take a couple breaks and take your time.let me know exactly what the bill you have says and we can make a more acurate diagnosis of this prob,ty for writeing please vote for me billymac
