GM-GMC: Power Window, chevy pickup, lock switch

Question
goodwrencher,

I have a 2002 1/2 ton Chevy pickup that the drivers power window is not working. A couple of weeks ago I heard some grinding as I was putting the window down and it only went half way down but lucky for me it went back up. It is not the greatest weather here in Pittsburgh right now so I haven't looked into it real hard but I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction with regards to what might be the problem. Also looking at the inside door panel, can you give me some pointers on getting that panel off? Thank you and any information you can give me on the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Again, Thank You

Mike

Answer
I can say with a good degree of certainty that you will need a new window regulator.  Those regulators use cables which eventually fray and start to bind up etc etc.  You can get them with or with out the motors, without is cheaper but requires a little bit more work, not much.  As for removing the panel, it isn't difficult.  remove the trim at the front near the mirror.  remove the trim from around the door handle, remove the little door lock/unlock trim, remove the window and door lock switch assembly and unplug them.  there are a few screw to remove , the screw under the switch, from under the handle assembly, and I think on that year of vehicle that is all there is, but on some of the newer models there is one under the reflector so maybe look under there.  I am doing this from memory so forgive me if I missed one.  You will know in a hurry.  To remove the panel just slide it upward and remove.

To remove the regulator, position the window so that you can access the two bolts that secure the window to the regulator, pull the window up and duck tape it over the door so it stays in place. Remove the three or four bolts that mount the regulator to the door, disconnect the motor fold it in half and pull it out.
If you need to, transfer the motor to the new regulator and put everything back in reverse order.
Thats a bit of a pain but definately within most peoples ability.
Hope this helps.
