Volkswagen: 1969 VW Bus, rear brakes, vw bus

The bus has been sitting in the garage with the emergency brake applied for over a year.  The rear brakes won't release.  The right rear wheel drags much harder than the left.  I've jacked up the rear & tried roating the wheels backwards with no success.  What to do?2naa5

Hi Lyle,

This is a pretty common problem.  Make sure that the cable isn't stuck first.

If you are sure that it there is slack in the cable, than remove the wheel and tap around the brake drum with a hammer.

More often than not, this pops it free.

If, to no avail, than you need to start backing off the adjuster screws while periodically using the hammer to break it free.

(you don't need to use brute force with the hammer, just use a sensible bang.  ---- use earplugs as well!)

This will get you motoring again.
