Outboard motors have a long manufacturing history, with some makes and models dating back over 100 years. Some of the very old models have antique value, and many have been restored to original working condition because the parts remain warehoused. Correct schematics and repair diagrams can be important aids in repairing or restoring your outboard motor. Finding them in service and repair manuals can be as easy as a finger click on an Internet link or a drive to your local marine supply store.
Check the owner's operation manual for your outboard motor. Since it covers only basic operator's instruction, the manual will probably not include detailed motor schematics. However, it will contain the serial and model numbers of your outboard motor along with its date of manufacture. Locate the serial plate on your motor and copy all of the information, including the date of manufacture, serial number, model number, make and engine type and number of cylinders.
Use your computer to locate the main outboard motor repair manual listings, such as the Iboats website. You will find a list of outboard model makes by manufacturer, such as Johnson, Mercury or Honda. Click on the make of your motor. The next page will indicate the model and give its range of dates and number of cylinders.
Click on the appropriate link that identifies your motor. The next page will show you the specific repair manuals. First read the captions that explain the contents under the "Read More" option. Make sure the manual has repair diagrams and schematics for your motor. Find the correct book and click on the "Add to Cart" feature. You will need a PayPal account or another way to pay online. If you wish to send a check or money order, click on the "Contact" part of the main page at the bottom for the address.
Bring up the Google bar with your Internet browser. To find individual, single-page schematics of a certain outboard, type in the make, date and model of your engine and click on the "Google Search" button. It will take you to a page listing that has schematics for various components of your motor. Scroll down to find your particular schematic page, such as impeller schematic, wiring diagram, or lower unit removal. You can refine your search by adding your component identification.
Search the Internet for your dealer by name: "Mercury Outboard," "Honda Outboards" or whatever it might be. Look for a sidebar on its home page that displays departments, shortcuts or general listings. You need to find "Maintenance Resources" or "Repairs" or "Service." Click on one of those listings. The next page will categorize the motors by horsepower and type. The type is either a two-stroke motor or a four-stroke motor. Click on the link you need and accept the PDF download.
Locate your nearest marine supply store. Go to the service desk with your motor information, including the make, model and year of your motor. You will receive your specific paperback repair manual, which includes diagrams and schematics. Clymer outboard service manuals, which an independent publisher produces with the assistance of experts, contain drawings, diagrams and schematics that cover your motor. Determine if you want a general repair manual or a troubleshooting guide. Make the purchase.
