The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in your 1999 Dodge Caravan is akin to the central processor unit of a computer. The PCM manages and regulates most of your Caravan's electrical systems, as well as the engine control system. The PCM in your Caravan is a single metal box that is roughly the size and shape of a car stereo. Replacement of your PCM is a fairly easy task that can be done at home with few tools in a short time.
Open the hood of your Dodge Caravan. Loosen and take off the negative battery cable.
Find your Caravan's PCM. It will be located on the driver's side of the engine block near the front of the wheel well.
Remove the retaining bolt that holds the wiring harness into place on your Caravan's PCM. Use a socket set to remove this bolt then disconnect the electric connections by hand. Once you have removed them, slip the old PCM out and place the new one in.
Reconnect the electrical connectors by hand then insert the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt with your socket set.
Place the negative battery cable back on and tighten it with your socket set.
