How to Replace the Power Steering Pump in a 1993 Geo Prizm

Replacing parts for a vehicle like the 1993 Geo Prizm can be difficult since you are dealing with an older version of a discontinued model. If you need to replace the power steering pump in the car, you will likely need to go to a specialty store for a replacement part. The power steering pump is powered by its drive belt, and talking with your mechanic before you replace it yourself is recommended. Once you replace the pump, you will need to bleed the power steering system.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Breaker bar and socket

Removal

  • Disconnect the car's negative battery cable.

  • Remove air cleaner assembly, disconnecting all hoses (the main duct should require pliers on the clamp) and electrical connectors and then removing the mounting bolts/screws.

  • Remove the power steering pump's drive belt, loosening the tensioner or idler pulley bolt with a wrench or breaker bar to relieve the tension and slipping the belt off the pulleys.

  • Loosen the retaining clip for the power steering hose and remove the return hose from the pump. Disconnect the pressure hose from the pump with an injection line wrench on its bolt.

  • Unscrew and remove the pump's upper mounting bolt with your wrench. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the power steering switch and remove the three bolts on the pump's bracket mount, the two on the engine block and the one on the engine mount.

  • Remove the last bolt--the lower mounting bolt--and remove the pump from the engine.

Installation

  • Install the lower power steering pump with its bracket onto the engine and apply all the mounting bolts--the lower mounting bolt, the engine block and mount bolts and the pump bracket mount bolts.

  • Connect the vacuum hoses to the power steering switch. Connect the pressure hose with its bolt and return hose with its clip.

  • Reattach the drive belt, making sure it is routed across the pulleys in the same path. Tighten the idler pulley to the correct tension if needed; the belt should not give more than a quarter inch when you press down on it in the center.

  • Reinstall air cleaner with its fasteners and reconnect its hoses and electrical connectors.

  • Reconnect the battery cable.

Bleeding

  • Start the engine and turn the wheels all the way to the left, then shut the engine off.

  • Open the power steering reservoir in the engine compartment and add extra fluid to the cold mark on the indicator.

  • Restart the engine, run it at a fast idle for 15 seconds and then shut it back off. Add extra fluid to the cold mark if needed.

  • Run the engine again and turn the wheels right and left three or four times. Turn off the engine and check the fluid's level and color; if the fluid is a light tan color, there is still air in the system.

  • Repeat the previous step until the fluid is at the correct level and color.
