How to Run an Amp Wire Through S-10 Firewall

An amplifier receives the signal from a vehicle's stereo and as its name indicates, amplifies, or increases the power of the signal before it is routed to the speakers. This amplification allows for increased volume of the signal as it is broadcast through the speakers, while eliminating distortion. In order for an amplifier to function properly it must receive power from the vehicle's battery. This is accomplished by running a power wire, with in-line fuse, from the amplifier through the Chevy S-10's firewall and to the vehicle's battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench
  • Tape measure
  • Marker
  • Drill with bits
  • Disconnect your Chevy S-10's black negative battery cable using a Crescent wrench.

  • Find a location on the firewall inside the engine compartment that is free from obstruction on the passenger side of the vehicle. Try to locate a spot that is slightly lower than the dashboard inside the truck.

  • Use a tape measure to measure the distance of the location from the side of the vehicle and the distance from the top of the firewall. Use the measurements to find the same location from inside the S-10. Pull the vehicle's carpet away from under the dashboard and use a marker to mark the location.

  • Drill a hole through the firewall at the marked location. Be sure to select a drill bit that is slightly larger in diameter than the power wire.

  • Connect the power wire to the positive battery terminal using a Crescent wrench. Be sure the end with the inline fuse is closest to the battery. Run the power wire through the hole and to the amplifier. Reconnect the negative battery cable after securing the power wire to the amplifier.
