How to Modify a SOHC Honda VTEC

An SOHC Honda VTEC engine is a good engine to modify because there are many ways to do it, and you can do it on any budget. SOHC stands for Single Over Head Cam, which means that there is only one camshaft in the motor. Even so, modifying this engine can still greatly increase the horsepower and performance. You can install bolt-on products and parts, while professionals may need to install other parts.

  • Install a cold air intake in the place of the factory air box. A cold air intake forces cold air into the engine to cool it faster, which increases horsepower. Also, replace the intake manifold, which is on the back side of the of the SOHC motor, with an aftermarket intake manifold. The cold air intake attaches to the intake manifold and replacing both gives the best results.

  • Replace the existing exhaust system with an aftermarket system. Replace the exhaust from the exhaust headers on the engine all the way to the muffler for a full replacement. This gives the best results and most horsepower.

  • Change the factory fuel rail for an aftermarket fuel rail. An aftermarket fuel rail allows more fuel to be added to the engine while running, increasing horsepower. There are plain fuel rails or adjustable fuel rails available for the SOHC VTEC motor.

  • Put a turbo on the motor, which can greatly increase horsepower and performance. A turbo for an SOHC VTEC motor fits directly in front of the motor. You can purchase a separate kit specifically for this engine, or custom make one.

  • Add a nitrous oxide kit to the SOHC motor. This modification alone can quickly add 50 horsepower to your car. These kits are available for both standard and automatic transmission SOHC motors, which you can install in less than one day if you have mechanical skills.
