How to Build an Air Exhaust Silencer

The purpose of an air exhaust silencer is to give your motorcycle a much quieter sound. These silencers fit on the tips of the exhaust pipes on your motorcycle, and are lined with material that dampens sound. The material is specifically designed to absorb the sound waves produced by your motorcycle exhaust system, and you can either purchase a silencer or build your own at home with a few supplies and tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Coarse, stainless steel wool
  • Galvanized wire
  • Galvanized hardware cloth
  • Wire cutters
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Take several pads of steel wool and expand the pads to 8 inches. Cut a three inch square out of the pad of steel wool.

  • Slide the steel wool into the tailpipe until the steel wool is about an inch from the end of the pipe. Use a drill to make holes in the tailpipe. Make four sets of holes that are directly apart from each other.

  • Take the galvanized wire and slide it through each of the four sets of holes. Tie the galvanized wire. This puts pressure on the steel wool so that it retains its needed shape.

  • Cut a piece of galvanized cloth down until its diameter is half an inch bigger than the hole in the tip of the exhaust. Use your pliers to pull the piece of cloth into the tailpipe.
