Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectors are common in the modern electronic gadget industry. Many mobile devices include cables that connect to a computer, and USB is standard today. Increasingly, new cars are built with factory-standard USB ports. It is also a simple process to add a USB power port to any modern car equipped with a 12-volt lighter or accessory port. Purchase an adapter, plug it into the port and you can power devices such as mobile phones and portable game systems in your car.
Ensure that your car has a lighter or accessory port. These have been standard on all new autos for many years. They are round sockets about the size of a nickel, and will either have a cap or a lighter inserted.
Select a USB adapter. Multiple manufacturers have designed adapters that provide USB power from an automobile's cigarette lighter socket, and the adapters are widely available.
Insert the USB adapter into your car's cigarette lighter or accessory outlet.
Plug a USB cable into the adapter. Most car USB adapters will have a small light to indicate that they are active. Check the display of a connected device to confirm that it is charging.
