How to Install a Mesh Grill

Creating a mesh grill will take some time and patience. However, it is easy to do once you have the right tools and a clear work space. Adding a mesh grill can give your car an aesthetic edge and add a personal touch.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Mesh
  • Drill
  • Wire Cutters or Tin Snips
  • Clean Flat Surface

Remove

  • Remove the old grill. Using your wrench, loosen the bolts that hold the standard grill in place. The bolts are usually on the interior of the hood. You may have to lean into the engine compartment to do this.

  • Look for the hood release. Many cars have a hood release near or against the grill. Before you actually pull the old grill off, locate the hood release so it does not get damaged.

  • Place both hands firmly on either side of the old grill. Pull up and out in order to remove the grill. If it seems to be stuck, double check for any bolts or screws that you may have missed.

Build your New Grill

  • Lay your old grill on a flat clean surface. A large cardboard box that has been cut open will work fine. Alternatively, a long sheet of butcher paper or a clean workbench works well.

  • Examine the frame of the grill. Look for any scratches, dents, cracks or missing pieces. This is the time to fix it.

  • Remove the old grill slots. This may be done with either a hammer or a pair of wire cutters. Different grills will respond to different tools. Plastic grill slots can usually be pounded out while a wire grill needs to be cut with wire cutters.

  • Place the mesh over the original grill frame.

  • Wrap or tuck the mesh around the interior grooves of the grill. Alternatively you may wish to screw the wire mesh into the outer frame.

Replace

  • Hold your new grill under the hood so that the frame aligns in its original position. You should be able to see where the bolts or screws belong.

  • Bolt the new grill into place.

  • Double check each bolt to make sure it is tight.
