Chevrolet Repair: 1993 chevy pick up 5.7 350, valve seals, oil consumption

Question
I am going through a lot of oil. When accelerating from a dead stop i sometimes blow a little smoke. I have been told it is the valve seals......but the engine has 170,000 miles on it and i just think it is time for a rebuild or replace. Do you have any ideas to what would be my best bet to get rid of the oil consumption and smoking. There has been NO other problems with this engine.

Answer
Does it smoke alot on startup after sitting for a little bit?  If it does then your valve seals are bad and you would just replace those and the engine would be fine.  If it is not smoking alot on startup then you have more major issues and I would suggest a jasper replacement engine if you plan on keeping the truck for a long period of time.
