Motorcycle Repair: 1989 Suziki Katana, k n air filters, brian caldwell

Question
I have recently purchased a 1989 Katana 600.  I had to replaced the gas tank w/all necessary equipment Petcock, floater valve etc.  It has 2 into 1 Kirker pipes on each side and I was told that it has a phase III jet kit already installed with K & N air filters.  Do you for see any issues with it running properly once the tank is installed properly.  The carbs were cleaned prior to me purchasing the bike with the following description from the dealer: 130 mains jets, 4th clip position, mixer screw is three turns out, carbs are in sync.  I know the bike was not running prior to buying it, so I am not sure if the bike ran correctly or at all with this setup.

Thanks
Brian Caldwell

Answer
Brian,

the main jets sound a bit small unless
you live in a high altitude.
Does the dealer have experience using
this setup with success?
-The standard main jets for 89 models
are #137.5 for cylinders 1&4
and #135 for cylinders 2&3.
Have the carbs been replaced possibly?

-Jetting is usually done once the bike
is running by driving the bike at
the throttle opening you are trying
to tune and then shutting the engine
down quickly to get an accurate spark
plug color reading.
Depending on the color you jet it accordingly.

-Black is fuel mixture too rich,
A light tan/brown color is about right
and whitish or very light color is too lean.
I would favor the brownish color to be safe.

-if it runs okay with the present jetting
then you won't have to change anything.

Spark plug color charts are available at NGK online.
