RV Repair: generator problem, vicegrips, carburator

Question
I have a generator that I didnt use for a long time and I changed the oil and plugs and it wouldnt start. I kind of figured it woudnt but I checked and it was not getting fuel. I changed the fuel pump and the filter. I put in a regulator and new lines. Now it starts sometimes. It spews black smoke and sputters. then it dies. it wont start till I let it sit for awhile. but it still sputters then dies. I cleaned the carb because the pin was clogged and that cleared it. but it still doesnt run. I need to know if it will cost alot more to get it running I am getting poor. the plugs are black sometimes they are soaked with fuel to.I noticed if I swap the plugs from one hole to the other then it tries to start then it goes back to the way it was, please help.

Answer
Hi Steve:
You have either got a bad carburator or the choke is stuck on all the time. You can get to the choke butterfly through the carb air inlet. You can't see it unless you use a mirror but you can feel it with your finger. Make sure it is full open when it runs. If the carb is the cause I usually just pinch off the fuel line with a pair of vicegrips and try to start it. It will run for a little while ok till the fuel runs out but this will get you in the right direction. Have not seen too many bad chokes but have sen a lot of bad carbs. Good luck.
