Steering Column Repair: steering shaft upper bearing, steering column repair, cadillac eldorado

Question
QUESTION: I am replacing the steering shaft bearing on a 1988 Cadillac Eldorado to stabilize the movement in the steering wheel. The upper shaft bearing just below the turn signal/lock plate is completely worn. Where might I purchase a suitable bearing replacement. Not confident with the Cadillac Dealer parts as lately I've been getting parts that are not the right ones. The bearing should be 1 7/8" -2" across, 5/8" center hole clearance, maximum 1/4" thick. A seat is appropiate for this size bearing which may or may not be included.

ANSWER: Hi Alex

We have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the loose tilt column you are talking about. They are broken down into 12 step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.  Yours is a telescopic column, so you have a little more work on the upper end, but we have step-by-step instructions for that as well (not video).

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply email us on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally.  We stock just about everything you would need to repair your car properly (including OEM bearings if that's what you really need).

Good luck

Doug

QUESTION: 2-3 minute video is for a sedan or column shift. Do you have the video clip for  an Eldorado. My 1988 is sure to be more tutorial and precise to any Eldorado year with a floor shift.

Thanks again.

Answer
Alex:

The steering column design by Saginaw was used from approx. 1972 through 2006 on most every GM and some Chrysler vehicles.  The video we posted is for a Chevrolet truck, but covers that same design for over 30 years.  Your floor shift has some slight differences, but is basically the same column and uses the same bearings as those you have.
That's the same bearing we carry and all that was offered.

If we can help you with anything else, please feel free to contact us through the company website at www.stolenandrecovered.com.

Good luck
