How to Lower an S10 Pickup

A Chevrolet S10 pickup truck is a mid-sized truck, but is considered a mini-truck by custom truck enthusiasts. The S10 was the most popular mini-truck to customize for the entire time it was in production. Aftermarket accessory companies still make and sell accessories, including lowering blocks, for S10s. Lowering an S10 pickup is one of the first things custom mini-truck enthusiasts do to begin customizing it. This can take about three hours and only a few tools are needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Lowering blocks

Front

  • Lift the front of the S10 with a jack and place jack stands underneath the frame rails, just behind the front tires on each side of the truck.

  • Get underneath the front end and locate the torsion bar, which is about two inches in diameter and reaches across the truck between the front wheels, below the axle.

  • Use a ratchet and 12 mm socket to loosen the anchor bolts on the torsion bar, one side at a time. Loosening the bolt will lower the truck. Loosen each bolt the same number of turns so that both sides are even.

  • Lower the truck off of the jack stands and check the height. It can be raised or lowered a few inches in either direction by adjusting the torsion bar.

Rear

  • Raise the rear end of the S10 off of the ground with a jack. Place a jack stand on each side underneath the frame rails.

  • Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolts from the end of each U-bolt on the rear of the truck. There is one U-bolt on each side, on top of the leaf springs. Remove the bolts completely.

  • Place a lowering block on top of each leaf spring. Line the bolt at the bottom of the block up with the hole in the center of the leaf spring.

  • Replace the U-bolts on the truck, around the lowering blocks, and tighten the bolts. Lower the truck to the ground.
