My brother-in-law has just bought a landrover discovery 1 300tdi and need to know step by step how he can change the vacuum pump please.

Land Rover has a factory service support website where you can buy access by the day, month, or year.  That will give step by step instructions for anything at all on the truck.  You can also download the manias for later reference.  In the USA they call it Land Rover Tech Info.  I suggest getting familiar with that as it is the definitive source of directions like these.  We answer questions on this site but copying a long procedure is beyond the scope of answers here
