How to Clean a Chevy Suburban Throttle Body

Cleaning the throttle body in a Chevrolet Suburban can help increase fuel mileage as well as clean and protect the expensive throttle-body fuel injectors. The throttle body was introduced to the Suburban in 1987 as a means to make the 5.0- and 5.7-liter V-8 engines more powerful. The process of cleaning the throttle body should take no longer than one hour to complete. All of the tools and materials needed for this job are available at an auto parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 can aerosol throttle body or fuel-injector cleaner spray
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket set
  • Raise the hood. Remove the air intake hose and assembly from the engine, using a 3/8-inch drive ratchet.

  • Start the vehicle. Locate the throttle control under the hood. Increase the throttle on the engine by depressing the throttle assembly.

  • Spray the entire contents of a can of throttle-body cleaner or fuel-injector cleaner into the throttle body. The engine will want to stall with the increase in fuel to the fuel-air ratio. Increase throttle under the hood accordingly.

  • Throttle the Suburban at a higher-than-idle position for approximately two minutes after the spray can is empty. This will ensure that you burn off excess residue and residual spray.
