Steering Column Repair: Shift brake release interlock, brake light switch, ford taurus

Question
The shift brake release interlock is not functioning properly on my wife's 1998 Ford Taurus.  The car is locked in park and the brake lights are not working.  I looked at the switch and if I pivoted it the lights went on.  Is this fixable or does it need to be replaced? I'm not sure how it is supposed to operate when the pedal is depressed.

Answer
Hi John:

This indicates the common problem...the wire from the brake light switch or the brake light switch itself is broken.
When that happens, no power is sent to the brake lights OR to the shift release solenoid.

The repair is simple.  Either fix the broken wire to the brake light switch at the pedal or...Ford makes a brake light switch kit with new wires and switch that can be spliced in at the brake pedal and instructions on how to replace the switch.  the whole kit is about $18.00.  Once this new switch and connector is in, your shifter should work fine.

In the mean time here's how you shift it without breaking anything. Turn the key to the 'unlock' position...the position just be for the light come on.  This will release your shifter.  Shift it to Neutral, then start your car and be on your way.

Let me know if this does not cure your problem

Good luck
Doug
